Esporta win national tennis title

ESPORTA Thorpe Wood’s star-studded tennis team have just been crowned National Club League Over 45 champions.

The side, which included Alan Jordan, Guy Tremayne, Graham Neal and former Wimbledon stars Jeremy Bates and Nick Fulwood clinched the title after a 3-0 victory against Gidea Park.

But it was not all good news for Esporta as the team, boosted by the inclusion of another former Wombledon player Danny Sapsford, had lost the Over 35 final 3-1 against Leicester the week before.

Captain Jordan said: “We should have won the over 45s last year but we were forced to miss a lot of fixtures due to other teams pulling out so it made this year’s win all the sweeter.

“Sadly for the Over 35s we lost Nick and that proved to be decisive but it is still a great effort to reach both finals and win one of them.”
And there was also good news for the Thorpe Wood outfit in the Esporta National Club Finals.

Facing Esporta Clearview, the city side edged a championship tie break 10-8 thanks in large part to excellent performances from Steve Myers in the mens singles and Jackie Turner in the ladies singles.
